We caught up with ID That Track Founder and Curator Tom Hawkins-Mitchell to learn about where his inspiration for the account came from, what he’s loving from the scene now, and his vision for the future.
Mr. IDTHATTRACK, please introduce yourself.
Hi, I’m Tom but most of you all know me as the man behind IDTHATTRACK, I’m 28 years old from Harrogate, North Yorkshire, UK.
How did your interest in dance music start?
I have my friends to thank for this one – they’ve always been into house music growing up through school. I’ve also got my dad who was always big into his music so I think it’s a factor of both really. He attended Glastonbury a couple of times when he was younger.
Tell us about your first rave?
I’d attended many events after turning 18, but looking back they feel more like club nights. My first proper rave wasn’t until 2016. I was 20 years old and it was a Creamfields event at their famous Steel Yard stage on Liverpool’s Albert Dock. The headline artists were 2 of the Swedish House Mafia frontrunners, Axwell & Sebastian Ingrosso, plus Martin Solveig, Danny Howard, Third Party and more. I used to love EDM back in the day. My friends all decided it was the perfect time to venture out of the usual club nights and into a new scene and since then there has been no looking back.
Tell us about your favorite rave or set you’ve attended.
I’ve got a few favorite events and great memories I could name here, but what stands out to me is always a Skream ‘All Night Long’ set. I just love how much he can vary up his genres throughout the set and really pick up a crowd. A more recent event to give a special mention to is Circoloco Milan’s Jamie Jones Vs Seth Troxler set. That was my first time attending a ‘Vs’ set and it felt like they were bouncing off each other. I really enjoyed that energy.
What sound/ genre/ artists do you gravitate to?
My favourite genres are definitely Tech House & Minimal/Deep Tech, but Speed Garage has recently grown on me massively too. A quick top 5 of my favourite artists are Joseph Capriati, Enzo Siragusa, Jamie Jones, Skream and Chris Stussy.
When and why did you decide to start IDTHATTRACK?
IDTHATTRACK all started as a hobby. I was posting tracks that weren’t available on the Soundcloud platform, which garnered a name for the IDTHATTRACK profile as the followers and likes grew. I then created pages for the brand on Twitter and Instagram, and on these two platforms I began to speak about and post videos from events I attended. Now IDTHATTRACK has evolved into me being constantly on the hunt for Track IDs, looking to connect the dancefloors with the names of songs they are dying to hear again. I also promote up and coming producers and events wherever possible – I alway want to see the community and artists thrive.
How does IDTHATTRACK benefit the dance music community?
I love doing what I do. There’s a weird buzz from having such a wide knowledge of music and being able to assist everyone else by providing tracks they are trying to locate. Since I started the page, I always had the intention to assist up and coming producers and event hosts that I align with by growing their brand / name through promotions and premieres, and this will continue to be a focus of IDTHATTRACK.
Have you faced any challenges with IDTHATTRACK so far?
Definitely with how busy the account is nowadays, I’ve got message requests coming from all angles and trying to fit everybody into a tight schedule whilst working my 9-5 job and attending events myself, it’s hard to balance. Also I do get the odd person trying to cause a scene or wind me up but it’s social media can’t keep everybody happy.
What is your long-term vision/ plan for IDTHATTRACK?
I’ve had many ideas and plans over the years, but starting my own label and event is a goal of mine in the future. I’m focused right now on broadening my partnerships with a lot more clubs, festivals and brands. Potentially looking to bring out some merch somewhere down the line too.
Who are your ‘ones to watch’ currently in the music scene?
Special mentions here to a lot of my friends who are killing the scene and some who I think are going places very soon: Mason Talbot, Dxnby, Harry Unsworth, Sam Curran & Till Records, Elderado & Rektek, Charlotte Ord & Switch Up, Emma Forster, L.P. Rhythm, Gaskin & Bass Jamz, James Poole, Tommy Phillips, Paige Tomlinson. But there’s also so many more talented people I could name.
